What are study skills?

Study skills and study strategies are different perspectives applied to general learning.

Generally they are critical for success in school. Study techniques can focus on the process of organizing, taking and retaining new information, or passing examinations. These techniques include mnemonics that help with retention information, and effective note taking.

Techniques are grouped together to form the study process; such as the planning of the activity, underlining, summarizing, making schemes, reviewing, etc .; and other strategies that have a complementary nature, such as taking notes or making schoolwork.

As for teaching these techniques, both the psychology of learning and educational practice are in agreement that the teaching strategies should promote an effective and deep learning of these strategies and techniques.

But often they are left to the student and staff support network to increase study skills. There is a large number of books and websites, ranging from about specific jobs, such as Tony Buzan’s books about mind mapping techniques to general guidelines for successful study.

More broadly, a technique that enhances a person’s ability to study and pass exams can be called technical study, and this may include time management and motivational techniques.

One method used to focus on the key information when studying from books is the PQRST.3 method This method prioritizes the information in a form that is directly related to how they would be asked to use this information in an exam. PQRST is an acronym for the English words Preview (preview) Question (asking, questioning), Read (read), Summary (summarizing), Test (evaluate)

Preview: the student observes the subject to learn, reviews the top stories or points in the syllabus.
Ask: formulate questions to answer, once you’ve studied the issue.
Read: reference material related to the topic is reviewed and information that better relates to the questions selected.
Summarize: the student summarizes the subject, uses its own methodology to summarize information in the process, takes notes, makes network diagrams, flow charts, diagrams labeled, mnemonics, or even voice recordings.
Assessment: the student answers the questions created in the stage of questioning, in as much detail as possible; Avoid adding questions that may be distracting or lead him to change the subject.
