This is the conclusion of Henry Roediger and Mark McDaniel, two psychologists from the Washington University in St. Louis, who combined 80 years of learning and memory studies with the novelist Peter Brown in the book “Make it stick: the science of successful learning.
Various tools exist to help you remember, such as the famous method sheets.

Do not just simple replay your notes in your Learning Strategies
We know from studies that the majority of students when they study tend to read their courses. Many students say it’s their number one study strategy. We also know, from extensive research, that this kind of repetition and recycling information is not a very good way to learn or create permanent memory.
Studies of students from Washington University, for example, show that re-read a chapter of a book does not lead to any results, since they have the same knowledge that a student who reads only once.
At the first reading, you extract a lot of information. But at the second reading, you read with a spirit of “I know it, I know.” So you do not push the process deeply, you do not pull anything. Often, proofreading is superficial, and this method is very insidious because it gives you the illusion that you really know the information then made that they are only gaps.
2. Ask yourself many questions
A good technique to use in place of replay is the personal questioning using questions ready made or created by yourself. Reworking information is what will produce better learning and better memory. It also gives you a more accurate diagnosis of what you do not know, and that you need to learn. This method helps you to explore more efficiently and in an orderly manner.
Asking questions also helps you to understand in a deeper way. For example, say you study the history of ancient Rome and Greece’s commercial partnership. Stop wondering why they have become partners, but why are they now boat builders, and how they learned to sail the oceans.
This is not always “why” you can ask “how” or “what”. By asking yourself these questions, you try to explain, and by doing that, you create a better understanding, which leads to better memory and better learning. So instead of just reading, ask yourself questions that will make you understand the information.
3.Connect the new information to information you already know
Another strategy is to link the principles of the text to what you already know in a second reading. For example, if you study how neurons transmit electricity: one of the things we know is that you have fat sheaths around neurons, called myelin sheaths, which help the neuron to transmit electricity faster.
So you can compare it to water flowing through a pipe. Water moves quickly through but if you poke a hole it will leak, and you will not have the same flow. This is exactly what happens when they age, the myelin sheaths are broken and transmissions become slower.
4. Turn Information Visual
A very good strategy is to turn information into a visual image like a chart. Anything that creates active learning. This is very effective in the long term. You have to be less passive and be much more engaged and involved in learning to develop a deeper understanding.
5. Use study sheets

6. Stagger your study time!
Many students study at the last minute, all in one night, they repeat the information again and again. But again, research shows that this is not good for long-term memory. This will maybe help you pass the test the next day, but in the end you will not retain the bulk of information you may need to know next year.
And this is often the case according to statistics. Students returning the following year have, it seems already forgotten large chucks of last year’s studies because they studied at the last minute for their test. The best way is to space the rehearsals. Practice a little bit everyday and your learning will be much simpler.
7. There is no person made for mathematics
What differs between the students is their ability to learn and want to understand something, and especially how they learn. A good student who uses study tools and strategies will inevitably make faster progress than a student who stumbles through with no overall plan or use of any study aids.
